The situation

The National Heart Blood and Lung Institute (NHLBI) is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with a number of different public education and betterment campaigns, such as the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

COPD is a disease that primarily affects those who are middle income, 55+ and typically male, but not exclusively. It is a disease usually caused by a genetic predisposition to those who smoke, were smokers, or exposed to specific chemicals such a those in military service during the 50s or earlier.

We needed to create a boomerang social media information campaign that reached primary caretakers and healthcare providers of those with or predisposed to COPD focused on information and preventative care.

The final technology

Two main technological deliverables came from this project.

The website for COPD was built in Drupal on a secure network for NIH. We were required to handoff materials and instructions in order to allow the permitted developers to build the pages designed. The pages designed and all assets applicable were AAA accessibility certified to ensure government compliance requirements as well as targeting the target user group. This online resource was directed towards the target COPD user group as well as Primary Health Care providers.

The second deliverable is a social presence to reach the primary caretakers of those with COPD. Primary caretakers are typically younger and more tech savvy users than those afflicted by COPD.
